The first snow

Some say: “Finally”, others are rather disappointed that the summer is now definitely and officially over. This event brought the first snow to Groningen. Suddenly, everything was white when waking up on a Friday morning. Having talked to various people, the opinions about the first snow differ widely. Some students (especially international students) who haven’t seen snow in their life were really excited and you could see happy faces all over the place.

Other, having seen snow, ice, snowstorms a lot of times were still excited and happy about the first snow. However, not everybody shares this opinion. Walking through the halls of Zernike you could hear students complaining about the coldĀ and the snow and that days seem to end now about 5 pm since its getting dark earlier.

Because of this early darkness, it it advisable to always have light on your bike. Not only is it safer and other people will see you better, the police is checking frequently if students are cycling without lights. If you don’t have lights on your bike you will need to pay a fine of 35 Euros.

Additionally, you should be careful when cycling. Especially if you are not used to slippery pathways. This way injuries might be avoided.

Event though not everybody loves the winter, I must say I think it comes with its beauty. With snow everywhere there is comfortable and cozy silence all around town, and what is better than sitting inside with your friends, drinking hot tea, while everything outside is white and decorated with lights!? I suggest you to enjoy this time of the year, and try to make the best out of it!
