In the global village, nearly all business is cross-cultural. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have culturally diverse employees, are located in multicultural communities, and are likely to have international customers and suppliers. The cross-cultural contact generated by this diversity demands intercultural competence. While all successful business persons are ‘culturally competent’ – they have adequate social communication skills in their own societies – they do not necessarily have those skills in other societies. Even if people have a lot of cross-cultural experience, they do not automatically become interculturally competent.
