The reason for the demonstration was the ongoing reform in the education system that the Dutch government has initiated. The budget for education will be reduced incrementally, with aims to save hundreds of millions of Euros from education per year. This has sparked the concern amongst students in the Netherlands, as fears are that some lecturers may need to be laid off.
If the government sticks to it current plan, the students that will be influenced the most will be those suffering a study delay of more than 1 year. They may need to pay heavy fines in the
future, for not keeping up with their study program. Less money for education would also mean lower social contribution for education and an eventual increase of tuition fees.
