Public buses, Stoptrein, Bikes
Getting around in Groningen is simple and new students don’ t have to worry about this “problem”. The city of Groningen is called the bike city of the Netherlands, because 57% of the journeys within the city are accomplished by bikes. In other words, the area of Groningen has a comfortable size, lots of students and therefore getting around in Groningen is easy on bikes.
The city center is environmental friendly because it offers a large pedestrianized zone where all the shops are in walking distance.
Students who don’t like biking or walking or are afraid of going by bike in winter time can make use of the public transport Groningen has to offer. The Groningen public transport offers a variety of routes within the city. The buses charge 1.50 € per ticket for a full hour of public transport use within the city. The ‘strippenkart’ is a ticket system, which is confusing in the beginning but can save you some money. It is a single card that you can buy from a local store and use it for a few jorneys. When you enter the bus, you need to present your strippenkaart to the bus-driver who will stamp it for you.
Furthermore Groningen’s main train station offers trips to most of the major cities in the Netherlands as well as Schiphol Airport. In addition, you can use the bus from the station to go to Oldenburg and/or Bremen, Germany.
