Formalities
Registration at the city administration, opening a bank account, renting contract if not via housing office, a.s.o.
For anyone staying in the Netherlands for 4 months or longer is compelled to register in the Municipal Personal Records Database.
Not only is it advisable to do this asap, because registration papers might be needed for other purposes as well, but also to make an appointment before going, as there are long waiting periods most of the time.
The things that need to be brought are a legalized and international birth certificate (which you can get in the capital of your home country; at least this is what I did
), a valid passport, and a rental contract or other proof which shows that your address is in the Netherlands.
