Bisschop Nierman Centrum (Plutolaan)

The Bisschop Nierman Centrum student house, commonly known as just Plutolaan, is probably the closest student house to the Faculty of Economics and Business – 5 minutes walking distance. This student house is only for PhD and Master students, and can accommodate up to 69 international students, most of whom in single rooms. Have a look at our video review to find out if this is the student house for you!

Here is what student manager Andrea Jaeger told us about her experience there:

Describe Plutolaanin 3 words.

Master and PHD house, very close to the campus, good atmosphere

What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of Plutolaanin your opinion?

Some advantages are that it is only for master and PhD students, it is close to the campus, supermarket and university sports centre. Most rooms also have their own toilets. Disadvantages are that it is a bit further from the city centre and the faculties of arts, medical sciences and law.

Is the utilities offered/price ratio worth it in Plutolaan?

That is up to the students that live in the house. The good thing about Plutolaan is that the rooms are just renovated, and have all new furniture. In 2011 the showers were renovated!

What makes Plutolaan“special”?

The mature atmosphere of master and PhD students. Sometimes very nice parties are organized but during the week this house offers a good place to work and to study.

How is the overall social atmosphere in Plutolaan?

Very good! Students are very social. People are taking care of the kitchen, do their kitchen duty, and help each other when that is needed.

Why would a prospective FEB international student choose Plutolaanand not another student house?

That is a question I am not able to answer as I have never been a student or student manager in one of the other houses. For this reason, it not fair to make this comparison.

What advice would you give to the prospective international students?

Finding a nice room in the student city of Groningen isn’t easy. Don’t wait too long to apply for housing at housing office or another way because you could end up without a room!
